Asel Art Critique

In September we will start up our Asel Art Critique. Asel Art will be providing awards again. We would like to encourage everyone to bring a painting for the Asel Art competition. The more paintings, the better the competition. This is a benefit for those who are producing all the time and a good incentive for those who need motivation.

We have many talented artists and it is great to see what our members are doing! The Asel Awards are an important perk for our group, and we need to take full advantage of it. Bring a painting to the meetings! If you are a winner, be sure to use you award right away!

Art Critique is held the 4th Saturday each month. Anyone who would like to participate meets at the VAL gallery at 10:00 am for discussions, field trips, or art evaluation. All members are invited; there is no charge.

Bring two pieces of your work for critique. These sessions are informative and the more people that participate, the more you get from the critique. Please contact Lorraine Hayes at 972-317-4375 regarding the Art Critique.

Dallas School of Music 2004 Festival Exhibits

August 2, 2004

12:14 am

For the last few years, the Dallas School of Music (www.musicked.com), located at 2650 Midway Road (corner of Midway \& Trinity Mills) in Carrollton has a festival where they invite artists to exhibit their work. Eugene Cantera with Dallas School of Music has contacted us to participate this year. (He saw information about VAL in the newspaper). See his letter below and let me know if you are interested in participating. — Elaine

Visual Art League Members,

The Dallas School of Music Inc. has scheduled its Fall Art Festival for Saturday, September 11. Over the past 4 years the school has festival participants from around the country display their work in a wide variety of mediums including the quilts of national award winner Barbara Oliver-Hartman to the wire sculptures of Bart Soutendjyk. We have invited members from both the Plano and Dallas Guilds and even have had pieces from the traveling exhibits of the Dallas Museum of Art on display.

This year, award winning childrens authors Dan Hale and Matthew LaBrot will be signing books and Border’s Books and Music is scheduled to have on hand with art books and CD’s for sale.
The festival actually spans 3 or 4 main events over the course of 2 full months. We install the work during the week of September 7-10 and the kick off concert (where our music students perform) is on Saturday September 11 from 4:30 to 6 PM. There is usually a small reception to follow. On October 9 the faculty of DSM perform at our annual Gala and on November 13 our adult students perform on an evening that we call ‘Musicking’.

These three events give the artwork maximum exposure though this year there may be as many as 5 events during this period. We would love to have members of the Lewisville Visual Arts League participate this year. I would be happy to work with you to coordinate the collection and delivery of art if need be.

Anyone interested in purchasing artwork is put directly in touch with the artists. We have had some success in selling pieces and obtaining some commissions for artists. Best of all, it’s a chance to expose our 600 students and families to some terrific talent in visual arts and give some exposure to the artists.
I look forward to hearing from you!

VAL Artists at Barnes and Noble

Lorraine Hayes and Sher Hiner are exhibiting at Barnes and Noble during the month of July. Kenna Gallegos, Mary Ellen Wehrli and Bruce Schiefelbeinare scheduled to be there during the month of August. We are exploring the possibility of doing demonstrations there to draw attention to the art exhibit and to the activities and location of the Visual Art League. More to come regarding this endeavor.
