Lakeside Arts Foundation unveiled a months-long original project, the recently completed “Thank You, Veterans” quilt at the American Heroes event on Saturday, November 12 at Five Star Complex, in The Colony.
This modern approach to a traditional art form was designed, produced, and funded by Lakeside Arts Foundation and pieced and quilted by Dizzy Busy Bees quilt club and Canyon Oaks quilt studio to honor veterans and active military for their service to our country. The project started on Veterans’ Day 2010 where 100 fabric squares were decorated with permanent markers by children and youth from The Colony and surrounding area during the American Heroes celebration last year. Afterwards, more than a dozen volunteers worked for several months on piecing together and quilting the Thank You quilt.
The designer of the project, Lakeside Arts Foundation president, Christi Martin said, “This beautiful project is a loving tribute to those who serve our country. We are grateful to all who contributed to this collaborative work of art and we hope the community will enjoy it take a moment to be grateful for our troops!” For more information on Lakeside Arts Foundation see www.lakesidearts.org.

The Hunting Art Prize Houston, Texas
Deadline: November 30
The Hunting Art Prize, which is sponsored by the international oil services company Hunting PLC, is a prestigious annual competition open to established artists, talented newcomers, and promising amateurs. Its $50,000 award is historically the most generous annual award in North America for painting and drawing, and has helped to build the reputations, raise the profiles, and support the careers of distinguished artists.
The prize is open to Texas artists 18 years of age or older. Artists can register to participate through the electronic sign-up form.
Artists submit a single two-dimensional painting or drawing, and the finalist and winner are determined through a two-tiered jury process. The work of all finalists will be exhibited and available for purchase at the Hunting Art Prize gala on April 28, 2012, in Houston. Click here for more information
The Hunting Art Prize was established in 1981 and emerged as one of the United Kingdom’s leading art competitions before relocating to Houston in 2006. Today, the commitment upon which it was originally built remains as strong as ever: To provide artists the recognition they have earned, the sponsorship they deserve, and the opportunity to have their work viewed and discussed by as broad an audience as possible.
